Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
