Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these treatments must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
