Thomas Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Passion So Long As The Three Lions' Ace Leaves His Ego Outside.
A single omission was enough. A second one and it would have started to look spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to know that securing World Cup glory demands the involvement of the talented midfielder, although it is also up to the player to blend into the game plans and team pecking order required with England now that he is back in the manager's warm embrace.
The manager desires his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is a matter of harnessing it constructively. Skill is important but the squad have learned the hard way that there is consequences when stardom dominates. Nevertheless, a point has been made.
The midfielder had much to ponder after his omission of last month’s squad. He watched the national side book their place at the tournament without him. He watched Morgan Rogers shine as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach discuss appreciating the group’s energy and principles. Inevitably, he has reacted in top form, netting important strikes for Real Madrid versus Barcelona and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have put his tournament chances in serious doubt.
The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder directed towards frightening rivals rather than his own colleagues. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to starting a conflict with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period not playing has shown him that playing for one's country is a valuable, uncertain thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now offer support for the youngster after proving that he is willing to drop big names.
“There is no problem regarding him, and no concern about his personality,” the German commented. “Jude displays the edge. It takes a certain edge to achieve greatness that he reached. Everyone must help him and build an environment which he can use his drive in matches and for the objectives we are working towards as a team.”
The star dominated most of the attention at the team news conference for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers against one opponent and the other. Any other news? Indeed, what about another talent? This is another prodigious playmaker in need of coaching. He has not played for England since spring and has found it hard to hit the heights recently but Tuchel was impressed by the player after his performance in his club's victory against Borussia Dortmund recently.
The question, however, is how to use the multiple playmakers at available. Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a strong case to include another youngster once he overcomes a ongoing injury. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be too many? The previous manager never found the correct balance at Euro 2024. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, cramping the captain's style in the process.
It seems unlikely Tuchel doing similar if it harms the offensive structure. There is room for one No 10, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clarity helps. He is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the recalled Adam Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who must play through the middle. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It is illogical to ask Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play other flank?’” he stated. “Phil will play in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I've long had this fantasy about him for years. I think it fits his style best.”
Tuchel agreed there are times when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has such natural delight for the game, then clearly something is not right, be it his role, the environment, I don’t know.
“I think he is also accustomed to representing his club in a certain structure, to have a defined role. Believe he profits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”
Tuchel talked about Bellingham making runs for tap-ins and Foden drilling in goals from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his fine form for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.
The omission of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested using the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives if Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for trying new things.
At the same time, it is additionally a chance to foster the understanding with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up the captain to net in an international match against the Scots in over a year ago to find the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the pair linked up for a score. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is missing.
“At this point eventually it becomes the duty of the players,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a feeling of Bellingham under scrutiny. He may not be assured to begin versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants Bellingham committed but he will be monitoring him carefully. Set aside self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an more effective one.
