Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a prominent prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
