No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
