New England Warming More Rapidly Than Most Places on Earth, Research Reveals.
The American area known for its colonial history, maple syrup and frigid, snow-covered winters is undergoing a rapid change. Fresh analysis finds that New England is warming faster than almost anywhere else on the Earth.
Breakneck Pace of Change
The rate of temperature increase in New England makes it the most rapidly warming area of the continental United States, according to the research. The pace of its temperature rise has apparently accelerated notably in the past five years.
"The temperature is not only increasing, it's accelerating," stated a lead researcher on the project. "It's really accelerated in the past few years, which was unexpected to me. Our climate is moving in a different trajectory, after being largely consistent for thousands of years."
The analysis places the north-eastern US among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, together with the Arctic and parts of Europe and China. "New England is now moving toward being like the south-eastern US," the scientist added.
Analysis Approach and Findings
For the study, researchers analyzed multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis covered the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They found that New England has heated up by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the global average, with the planet warming by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the comparable timeframe.
"That is very fast heating, which is concerning," commented the study author.
Key Warming Patterns
- Minimum temperatures are rising faster than maximum temperatures.
- Winters are heating up at double the speed of other times of year.
- The severe cold New England is known for is being eroded.
Oceanic Factors and the "Heat Battery"
A primary cause for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be changes in the North Atlantic. The global seas are absorbing the vast majority of the surplus thermal energy trapped by emissions.
In the north Atlantic, an influx of cold, fresh water from Arctic ice melt is disrupting the Gulf Stream. This is pushing warmer water into the coastal waters, concentrating heat along the coastline that is then carried inland by wind patterns.
"The excess heat from climate change is being stored in the oceans like a huge battery," said the researcher. "This is now being released into the atmosphere and New England is a receiver of that energy."
Consequences on Life and Extremes
Once seen as a mild climate haven, New England has experienced extreme climate events in recent years, including devastating flooding and extended dry spells.
The rising heat endangers iconic aspects of regional life:
- Maple syrup production is being affected by changing climate conditions.
- Winter sports are disrupted; an hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been called off or moved repeatedly due to unsafe ice conditions.
- Winter tourism have struggled because of inadequate snowfall.
"I reside just outside Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to skate on the ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That tradition has largely disappeared from much of the southern part of the region."
