Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Claim First Wins After Recent Detentions
Miami put up eighty-six first-half points versus the Grizzlies
The Heat earned a decisive 146 to 114 victory over the Grizzlies in their initial NBA game since player Rozier was detained for alleged unlawful sports betting.
Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also detained as part of a sweeping FBI investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the claims.
But, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six opening half scores to lead the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the franchise's 37-year existence.
Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and later said Rozier had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam said. "You support him through and through. He's like family ultimately."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is somebody who is very dear to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through this."
The Trail Blazers also secured their first game since the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and leading the team to a decisive 139-119 victory over the Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests
Addressing the detentions for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner also said an NBA investigation into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he added.
"We investigated the matter and were open about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. Naturally, what they announced recently was an indictment.
"Moreover 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Rozier.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
