Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a batch of electronic messages between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
Summers commented in a statement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have contributed, excited about the prospects of the company, and eagerly await following their advancement".
The prominent academic, who formerly presided over the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public messages revealed that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 arrest for suspected human trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it understood his determination to step down.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the governing body," OpenAI commented.
Legislative Background
This development follows after both chambers of Congress decided on Tuesday to pass a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will subsequently proceed to the administration of the White House for signature. He has indicated he expects to endorse the bill, after changing his view on the issue following pushback from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-related messages released by the House Oversight Committee days ago mentioned multiple prominent individuals in the financier's past associates, without implying any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The communications indicated that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often trying to link Summers to notable world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the emails were made available with the public, the former official expressed he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised choice to maintain corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to reestablish trust and fix bonds with the persons most important to me".
Professional History
The professor served in senior posts under party leaders; serving as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He presided over the university from five years and continues to be a academic there. When stating his departure from public commitments earlier on Monday, he said he would continue his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank in the capital where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was no longer connected with the group.
He entered the board of the AI company, which creates ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its top executive Sam Altman.
