The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
